Why hockey uses round robin
Hockey tournaments and rec leagues rely on round robin because a single bad game should not end a team's event — especially in youth hockey where development minutes matter. Every team gets the same number of games, and standings reflect goal differential and head-to-head across the full schedule.
Pre-season NHL-style tournaments often use 4–8 team pools with single round robin, then medal rounds. Adult rec leagues frequently run double round robin so home and away ice time balances over a season.
Games and ice time by team count
A 6-team hockey pool runs 15 games and 5 rounds — three games per round if every game is on its own sheet. An 8-team pool needs 28 games across 7 rounds.
Budget ice hours before you register teams: multiply rounds by slot length (warm-up + three periods + flood). Two sheets running in parallel halve wall-clock time.

Home ice, officials, and standings
Label home and away in the export so arena staff know which bench dresses first. For neutral-site tournaments, swap sides each period per your league rules.
Publish tie-breakers before puck drop: points, head-to-head, goal difference, goals for, fair play. Hockey often ranks regulation wins above shootout wins — state that explicitly.
Enter scores after each game so captains see live standings on the view link. Referees can use the score link without editing the fixture list.

- Hold 15-minute buffers between youth games for ice cut
- Archive CSV results for league disciplinarians and sponsors
Hockey round robin FAQ
- How many teams fit on one sheet in a day?
- A 4-team round robin (6 games) is realistic on one sheet with 75-minute slots. Six teams need two sheets or a two-day event.
- Should youth tournaments use single or double round robin?
- Single round robin for weekend events — more teams, more games per day. Double round robin for season-long city leagues.
- Can I use our own association team names?
- Yes. Replace NHL presets with your club names, choose single or double format, then export or publish live.
- How do shootout wins affect standings?
- Define in your rules — many leagues award 2 points for regulation wins and 2 for shootout wins but rank regulation wins higher in ties.
