See full workflowWhat is a round robin tournament?
A round robin tournament is a competition format in which every participant plays against every other participant at least once. Unlike single-elimination brackets where a loss ends your run immediately, round robin guarantees each team a full schedule of games regardless of results — making it the fairest format for measuring relative performance across a group.
In a single round robin, each pair meets exactly once. With n teams, that produces n × (n−1) / 2 total games across n−1 rounds. A double round robin adds a second cycle with home and away reversed, doubling the game count and reducing the influence of luck on final standings.
Round robin is the standard format for most major sports leagues — football premier leagues, hockey regular seasons, chess tournaments, and volleyball pool play all use it because it consistently produces the most accurate ranking of a field. For one-day events or small groups, it also means everyone gets to play, not just the bracket winners.
RobinDraw generates balanced schedules automatically — distributing home and away games evenly, minimising consecutive same-opponent matchups, and exporting ready-to-use formats in seconds. Read the full guide →
Common questions
- What is a round robin tournament?
- In a round robin tournament, every participant plays against every other participant exactly once (single round robin) or twice (double round robin). It guarantees the most games for all teams and is widely used in sports leagues, chess tournaments, and competitive brackets.
- How many games are in a round robin tournament?
- For n teams, a single round robin produces n×(n-1)/2 games. For example: 4 teams = 6 games, 6 teams = 15 games, 8 teams = 28 games. A double round robin doubles these numbers. Use our calculator to find the exact count for your setup.
- How do I generate a round robin schedule?
