The standings table is the scoreboard of a round robin. Every team watches it after each game. If your points rules are clear and results are entered promptly, the table does the arguing for you. If not, you spend the awards ceremony in disputes.
What the table shows
- Played — games completed
- Won / Drawn / Lost — or Wins / Losses in two-outcome sports
- Goals or points for and against
- Goal or point difference (GF minus GA)
- Points — from your published scoring system
- Rank — position after tie-breakers
Common points systems
| System | Win | Draw | Loss | Typical sports |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Three-point | 3 | 1 | 0 | Football, hockey |
| Two-point | 2 | 1 | 0 | Some rugby leagues |
| Win percentage | 1 win | — | 0 | Basketball, baseball |
| Chess | 1 | 0.5 | 0 | Chess round robin |
Reading goal difference
Goal difference (GD) rewards dominant wins and punishes heavy losses without needing extra tie-breaker games. A team that wins 3–0 three times looks stronger than one that wins 1–0 three times — same points, better GD.
Some youth leagues hide GD to discourage running up scores — in that case use head-to-head earlier in your tie-breaker list.
Live standings vs end-of-day updates
Players expect live updates in 2026. A paper sheet on a fence works for casual events, but a public link reduces 'what if' questions at the snack bar.
RobinDraw recalculates rank after each entered result. Share the view-only link on day one; give referees the score link without edit access to fixtures.
When ranks change without new games
If team B's win improves their head-to-head over team C, team C can drop even when C did not play. That is correct — explain tie-breakers early so captains understand indirect shifts.
Publishing a final table
- Freeze results — no edits after organizer sign-off
- Export CSV for league archives
- Screenshot or PDF for social media
- List tie-breaker applied if teams were level
- Name champion and runners-up explicitly
FAQ
Why does a team rank above another with the same points?
Tie-breakers — usually head-to-head or goal difference. Your published rules document which column decided it.
Can standings show live during play?
Yes. Enter results round by round; the table updates automatically on the public view link.
What if a result was entered wrong?
Fix it before sign-off. After finals, changes need organizer approval and a note on the export.
Do forfeits count in goal difference?
Only if your rules say so — e.g. 0–3 forfeits affect GD in many football tournaments.
