An odd number of teams cannot fill every court each round. Round robin solves this with a BYE — one team sits out while the others play. The math still works, but organizers must explain how BYE rounds affect rest time, standings, and scheduling before the tournament starts.
Why BYEs exist
Round robin pairings need an even number of slots per round. With 7 teams, you get 3 live games and 1 BYE each round across 7 rounds.
Every team receives the same number of BYEs — exactly one per cycle in a standard single round robin with odd n. That keeps rest time fair.
Games and rounds with odd teams
| Teams | Games | Rounds | Games per round | BYEs per team |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 10 | 5 | 2 | 1 |
| 7 | 21 | 7 | 3 | 1 |
| 9 | 36 | 9 | 4 | 1 |
| 11 | 55 | 11 | 5 | 1 |
Do BYE rounds earn points?
Most sports award zero points for a BYE — it is rest, not a win. Some youth leagues award 1 point for a scheduled BYE to discourage no-shows; if you use that rule, publish it in writing.
BYEs never count toward goal difference or goals scored. They should not appear as 1–0 wins unless your league explicitly defines them that way.
Scheduling tips
- Rotate which team BYEs first — balanced generators distribute BYEs evenly
- Tell teams their BYE round when you publish fixtures
- Use BYE rounds for pitch maintenance or longer breaks between blocks
- If a team arrives late, do not swap BYE assignments without notifying opponents
What if a team drops out?
Regenerate the schedule for the new even or odd count. An even count removes BYEs entirely. Do not leave a ghost team in the list — cancelled games distort standings.
FAQ
Is a BYE the same as a forfeit win?
No. A forfeit is an unplayed match assigned a score. A BYE means no match was scheduled that round for that team.
Can two teams BYE in the same round?
Only with an even number of BYEs total — e.g. 9 teams have one BYE per round, not two. With 10 teams there are no BYEs.
Does RobinDraw add a BYE team automatically?
Yes. Odd team counts get a BYE slot so every round has complete pairings. Rename other teams freely; the BYE row is handled in the schedule.
